I can’t tell if I’m moving my mouth or if there’s even anyone to ask. ExcerptĪt first, there’s just darkness and silence. “A fascinating look at the disease uld have cost this vibrant, vital young woman her life” ( People), Brain on Fire is an unforgettable exploration of memory and identity, faith and love, and a profoundly compelling tale of survival and perseverance that is destined to become a classic. In a swift and breathtaking narrative, Susannah tells the astonishing true story of her descent into madness, her family’s inspiring faith in her, and the lifesaving diagnosis that nearly didn’t happen. Now she was labeled violent, psychotic, a flight risk. Days earlier, she had been on the threshold of a new, adult life: at the beginning of her first serious relationship and a promising career at a major New York newspaper. When twenty-four-year-old Susannah Cahalan woke up alone in a hospital room, strapped to her bed and unable to move or speak, she had no memory of how she’d gotten there. An anniversary edition of the award-winning memoir and instant New York Times bestseller that goes far beyond its riveting medical mystery, Brain on Fire is the powerful account of one woman’s struggle to recapture her identity-with a new note to readers by the author.

Weaving in Mickey throughout brought to life how a parent's life is so impacted by their personal love of their child and how their dedication and love is so meaningful to that person in overcoming the many obstacles faced in their development. Following the life of Donald Triplett was so captivating and informative and very sensitive to how his life has been blessed by the people of his hometown. I spent many years working with individuals with autism as a Director of Special Education and this wonderful program is something I would have all staff watch to better understand autism and it's many levels of functioning. If you want a great overview of autism, this highly sensitive portrayal of the various ways it impacts people is highly recommended. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Lee winter hotel queensToday, there are more readers interested in lesbian fiction than ever before, and the genre gains traction every day. The 50s and 60s brought a flood of queer interest into the literature world, with a famous example being Tereska Torres’ ‘Women’s Barracks’. The 1928 novel ‘The Well of Loneliness’ is often considered to be the first explicitly lesbian-themed novel written in English, but it certainly wasn’t the last. This trend continued with the swell of modern novel styles, with a few periods of works from the early 19th-century holding and implying strong lesbian themes very often even where the slightest male-to-male mention of homosexuality would have been picked up on immediately. There’s Sappho again for you – if only this Grecian poet knew the queer icon she’d turned out to be. Much to the contrary, lesbian fiction has been running strong for thousands of years, with some of the earliest recovered excerpts coming from as early as 2,500 years ago. Many people consider queer romance fiction to be a modern phenomenon from the era of the internet, especially when it pertains to young adults and contains YA themes, but much like bad-faith breakdowns of the connection between Sappho and her ‘friend’, they couldn’t be further from the truth. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Birds of Selborne by Gilbert WhiteIn the letters, White makes astute observations about the flora and fauna visible in different seasons in his local parish of Selbourne in Hampshire. The book, which is compendium of correspondence with other naturalists of his day, was originally published by the parson-naturalist's brother, Benjamin White, in October 1789. Today we understand that numerous species pairs or complexes around the world can only be positively identified by birders on the basis of their songs and call notes. Today, these birds are known as the willow warbler ( Phylloscopus trochilus), wood warbler ( Phylloscopus sibilatrix) and chiffchaff ( Phylloscopus collybita). In his seminal book The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne (1789 The Natural History of Selborne for short), Reverend Gilbert White (UK, 1720–93) became the first naturalist to recognize that a common bird of the English countryside then popularly known as the “willow wren” actually comprises three different species, based purely upon the voices/calls of these otherwise extremely similar-looking birds. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Home coming john bradshawZoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp, GoToMeeting, Google Meet, MS TeamsĬopyright© 2013-2023 Bay Area Health Psychology. I am led to hope that Chollet is perhaps somebody who believes in abiding by the rules of a debate process, a fan of what I’d consider Civilization and if his entry into this conversation has been met only with braindead arguments and insults, he deserves a better reply. An intellectual superpower is the ability to consider every new idea as if it might be true, rather than merely checking whether it confirms/contradicts your current views.Ĭhollet’s essay seemed mostly on-point and kept to the object-level arguments. If you post an argument online, and the only opposition you get is braindead arguments and insults, does it confirm you were right? Or is it just self-selection of those who argue online?ĭon’t be overly attached to your views some of them are probably incorrect. In response to critics of his essay, Chollet tweeted: This is a reply to Francois Chollet, the inventor of the Keras wrapper for the Tensorflow and Theano deep learning systems, on his essay “ The impossibility of intelligence explosion.” A reply to Francois Chollet on intelligence explosion One slip could bring doom not only for Feyre, but for everything-and everyone-she holds dear.Īs war bears down upon them all, Feyre endeavors to take her place amongst the High Fae of the land, balancing her struggle to master her powers-both magical and political-and her love for her court and family. ACOTAR week! The reviews of each of the individual books will be spoiler-free (I got to read them without spoilers, so you should, too!), but I do plan on doing a wrap-up of my thoughts of the series as a whole that will include spoilers. Welp, this is definitely a case of something I would have never done without being an active follower of other Bookstagram accounts, but here we are. You may not know the names, but you will know the music: Ya-Ya, Mother-in-Law, Good Rockin' Tonight, I Like It Like That, Barefootin', Time Is on My Side and on and on. The book is in seven parts: Piano Players (Tuts Washington, Professor Longhair, Huey "Piano" Smith, James Booker and Allen Toussaint) The Pioneers (Roy Brown, Mr Google Eyes, Dave Bartholomew) The Record Men (Cosimo Matassa, Dr Daddy-O, Johnny Vincent, Joe Banashak, Marshall Sehorn) New Orleans Blues (Bill Webb, Guitar Slim, Earl King) Woman's Viewpoint (Shirley Goodman, Dorothy Labostrie, Irma Thomas) The Second Line (Lee Allen, Smiley Lewis, James Crawford, Johnny Adams, Bobby Mitchell) the Hit Makers (Chris Kenner, Bob Marchan, Frankie Ford, Jessie Hill, King Floyd, Ernie K-Doe, Lee Dorsey). It covers the New Orleans music scene from post WWII through to the early 80's. This is a well researched book, with a lot of interviews with the author searching out the movers and shakers and those that knew them. I came to this book through a recommendation from my friend Dave Squires, known as Kidd Squidd on KXCI radio in Tucson. 5/12/2023 0 Comments Where She Went by Gayle FormanSince then, Cody, Meg’s parents, and the police have been receiving time-delayed emails from Meg that try to explain her decision to end her life. Meg killed herself by checking into a motel, leaving a large tip for the maid, and then drinking an industrial poison. Eighteen-year-old Cody is suffering through yet another memorial service for her best friend, Meg Garcia. As a quick warning: the novel has been described as too graphic in its descriptions of suicidal ideation for some readers. During the course of the novel, various possible motivations are presented and explored – but none offers a complete answer to this “mystery” because, in the end, there is no mystery to solve, but just a death to mourn. The young adult novel I Was Here (2015) by bestselling author Gayle Forman tells the story of a young woman grieving the suicide of her best friend by trying to solve the apparent mystery of why a seemingly happy person would kill herself. 5/12/2023 0 Comments How to be a bawse book“I am so thrilled to write my first book and share, all in one place, what I’ve learned about achieving success and happiness.
